The Orion XS 12/12-70A, developed entirely from scratch, redefines DC-DC battery-to-battery charging. It is a professional, highly efficient 70A DC-to-DC charge booster with integrated Bluetooth functionality and automatic engine run detection. Thanks to its extremely compact design and aluminium PCB technology, which delivers an efficiency of 98.5% and ensures lower heat generation, it is ideally suited for use in a wide range of applications.
As the capacity of battery systems continues to grow, larger battery storage systems are placing increasingly higher demands on the charging system. The new Victron 12/12-70A meets this requirement with a charging current of up to 70A, offering you greater flexibility when specifying higher-capacity systems – without increasing installation complexity. It is therefore specifically aimed at anyone for whom the performance of the Orion XS 12/12-50A or the Orion XS 1400 was insufficient – thereby filling the gap for applications with higher power requirements. And all this in the same compact Orion XS design.
The Orion XS 12/12-70A is suitable for use in dual-battery systems in vehicles, motorhomes or on boats, where the alternator and the starter battery are used to charge the auxiliary battery. Controlled and regulated charging of the on-board battery is essential, particularly in vehicles with intelligent alternators compliant with Euro 5 or Euro 6 standards, as well as in cases of voltage loss due to long cable runs.
With its 4-stage charging curve, the B2B charge booster is ideally suited to both lead-acid and lithium batteries. An unlimited number of these units can be connected in parallel to increase the output power and thus speed up battery charging.
The DC-DC converter can also be used as a constant-voltage power supply to provide sensitive 12V loads directly with a stable voltage. In power supply mode, the output voltage remains stable regardless of the connected load or varying input voltages (within the specified range). The desired output voltage can be easily set via the app.
As an integral part of your Victron system, the Orion XS 12/12-70A offers comprehensive (remote) monitoring and control options, giving you complete control over your device and system.

General design considerations: To avoid overloading the alternator, it should ideally have twice the rated power of the charge booster. For a 70A charge booster, an alternator with a minimum rating of 140A is therefore recommended. Although the current draw of the charge booster can be limited via the settings in the Victron Connect app and adjusted to the alternator’s available power if required, it is recommended that you adhere to the above rule of thumb in order to utilise the booster’s full charging capacity.
Smart alternator compatibility with the Orion XS 12/12-70A
More and more vehicle manufacturers are using intelligent ECU (Engine Control Unit)-controlled alternators to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Smart alternators deliver a variable output voltage and are switched off when not required. This means that auxiliary batteries are no longer charged adequately whilst driving, due to the voltage being too low or the alternator being switched off. Thanks to this charge booster’s wide input voltage range, rapid and complete charging of the service batteries is ensured, even in Euro 5 and 6 vehicles.
Integrated engine run detection in the Orion XS 12/12-70A
The B2B charger, formerly known as the Smart Buckboost, automatically detects whether the vehicle’s engine is running or not. This is made possible by the integrated engine cut-off detection. This ensures that the charge booster only operates when the alternator is also running. This also prevents the vehicle’s on-board voltage from dropping too low. There is no need to interfere with the vehicle’s system, search for a D+ signal, install a separate engine run sensor or make changes to the CAN bus system. When the engine is switched off, the service battery is reliably disconnected from the starter battery. As an alternative to the integrated engine run detection, the Victron Orion XS 12/12-70A DC-DC charge booster can also be activated via a forced charging authorisation, e.g. connected to the ignition switch or D+.
Configuration and monitoring via the Orion XS 12/12-70A
Bluetooth Smart:
The wireless solution for setting up, monitoring and updating the booster using Apple and Android smartphones, tablets or other devices. Many parameters can be customised using the VictronConnect app, including the charging current in 0.1A increments, as well as the input voltage range and charging parameters. The VictronConnect app is available for download HERE.
In the VictronConnect app, the device list already displays the most important live data and alarm messages at a glance, without the need to connect to the device.
VE.direct connection:
This is available for a wired connection to an Victron communication centre, such as the Cerbo GX MK2 or the Venus GX. This allows the charging booster’s data to be displayed on a monitor connected to the Victron communication centre, such as the GX Touch 50 or the Color Control GX, and the configuration to be adjusted. If the communication centre is connected to the internet, the data can even be viewed worldwide via the Victron VRM portal.
In vehicles, motorhomes and boats that already have several Victron components installed, adding an Victron communication centre is a sensible option, as all information from the connected devices is consolidated in the communication centre and displayed on a single screen. The Ekrano GX centre already has a built-in monitor.
VE.Smart Network:
VE.Smart Networking is a wireless communication network between Victron products, known as Bluetooth Smart.
Using VE.Smart Networking, you can expand your Orion XS – in conjunction with a battery sensor such as the BMV 712 Smart, SmartShunt 500A/50mV or Smart Battery Sense – to enable remote measurement of battery voltage, temperature and current. The Orion XS receives the available information from the battery and uses this data to optimise the charging parameters.
Adaptive 4-stage charging algorithm of the Orion XS 12/12-70A
This makes it suitable for all common battery types, such as GEL, AGM, lead-acid and lithium batteries. With lead-acid batteries, it is important that the constant-voltage phase is kept short following deep discharges to prevent the battery from overcharging. Following a deep discharge, the constant-voltage phase is automatically extended to ensure that the battery is fully recharged.
Eight charging programmes for common battery types are pre-programmed. If required, custom charging programmes can be set up in full. These can be configured using the VictronConnect app.
Alternator overload protection when used with lithium batteries on the Orion XS 12/12-70A
It is particularly important to limit the currents when charging lithium batteries via the alternator. Due to the low internal resistance of lithium batteries, very high currents can flow from the alternator via the starter battery to the lithium battery. This can cause problems not only for the alternator but also for the vehicle’s existing wiring. The Orion XS 12/12-70A charge booster limits the currents to a safe maximum of 70A. Furthermore, the charging current can be individually adjusted via the app.
Undervoltage protection in the Orion XS 12/12-70A
The charge booster switches off when the input voltage (starter battery) drops below the set (freely configurable) voltage value, and switches back on when the input voltage rises above the set reactivation value. This ensures that the starter battery remains ready for use at all times and is not discharged too deeply. The voltage values can be configured via the VictronConnect app.
Comprehensive electronic protection in the Orion XS 12/12-70A
The protection functions include overload, short circuit and overtemperature protection. The charger is protected against overtemperature by reducing the output power when the maximum product temperature is reached.

The Orion XS can be configured via Bluetooth and the VictronConnect app, or, as in this example, via direct access using a laptop connected via a USB to VE.Direkt interface adapter.

1) This applies to optimal cooling when the product is installed with sufficient clearance as specified in the manual. In the event of restricted cooling, e.g. due to insufficient airflow, the charging current will be reduced earlier. With improved airflow (e.g. forced airflow), the power reduction occurs well above ambient temperatures of 40 °C.
2) The functions of VE.Smart Networking include the reception of Vsense, Tsense and Isense data from wireless networks, for example from a SmartShunt, BMV or Smart Battery Sense. Synchronised charging is not supported.
3) DVCC compatibility requires Orion XS firmware v1.03 or higher and Venus OS firmware v3.20 or higher on the GX unit
4) This value represents the rated power at a typical voltage of 14V (12/12–50A) and 28V (Orion XS 1400). Power is calculated as the product of applied voltage and current (P = V × I). Examples: 12V × 50A = 600W, 14V × 50A = 700W, 28V × 50A = 1400W
