Description

The SmartSolar MPPT RS solar charge controllers are Victron's solution for systems with large PV arrays connected in series charging 48 VDC battery banks. This product is perfect for large off-grid and grid-connected battery systems. Features include a wide 80-450 VDC operating solar voltage input, independent MPPT tracking inputs, full connectivity, isolated PV connections, integrated display, fully programmable battery charging parameters and active cooling. The new metal enclosure design and fully covered electrical connections improve safety and modernise the presentation in line with Victron's latest product range.

The MPPT RS SmartSolar is a 48V solar charge controller with a PV input voltage of up to 450VDC and an output current of 100A. It is used in grid-tied and off-grid solar applications where maximum battery charging power is required.


Multiple independent MPPT tracking inputs

With two independently operating MPPT trackers, you can optimise your solar panel design at your specific location for maximum performance. Two strings can be connected, each with a different orientation, and still each string will achieve its optimum performance. Even if the modules of one string are shaded, the second string operated in the optimal power range. 


Insulated PV connections for additional safety

Full galvanic isolation between PV and battery connections provides additional overall system safety.


Wide MPPT voltage range

PV operating range of 80 - 450 VDC, with a PV starting voltage of 120 VDC.


Lightweight, efficient and quiet

Thanks to high-frequency technology and a new design, the 100 A model of this powerful charger weighs only 7.9 kg. It also has excellent efficiency, low standby power and very quiet operation.


Display and Bluetooth

The display shows the battery and solar charge controller s parameters. The parameters can be accessed with a smartphone or other Bluetooth-enabled device. In addition Bluetooth can be used to set up the system and change settings with VictronConnect.


PV insulation resistance monitoring for safety at higher voltages.

The MPPT RS continuously monitors the PV array and can detect if there are any faults that affect the safety of the panel insulation.

The 100 A model of the MPPT RS charges a 48 V battery with 2 separate solar PV strings. In addition, it is combined with  GX device (Victron Cerbo GX).

VE.Can and VE.Direct connection
For connection to a GX device for system monitoring, data logging and remote firmware updates. VE.Can can be used to connect up to 25 units in parallel and synchronise their charging.

I/O connections
Connections for programmable relays, temperature sensors, add-ons, digital inputs and voltage sensors. The remote input can accept the Victron smallBMS and other BMSs with charging permission signals   .

The SmartSolar RS charge controller can be remotely controlled and configured via Bluetooth using the VictronConnect app. This allows for device setup and management, as well as at-a-glance information such as battery voltage and current, PV voltage and current, history data and trends. The integrated 30-day history shows the individual performance of each MPPT tracker.


Remote monitoring / remote control

If the GX device is connected to the Internet, the Victron Remote Management Portal (VRM) provides access to the full performance of your SmartSolar RS charge controllers. If your installation is connected to a GX device and the Internet, the Victron Remote Management Portal (VRM) provides access to the full performance of your MPPT, anytime, anywhere, and for free. For remote installations - even if there is no internet connection nearby - you may be able to monitor your MPPT by using the  GlobalLink 520 Connecting.

The SmartSolar RS solar charge controller connects to an 80 to 450 volt Voc PV array and efficiently charges your 48V battery bank at 100A or 200A. The charge settings are fully programmable and can be set for different battery chemistries, such as lead acid, lithium and others.


Additional units connected in series

The SmartSolar RS charge controller is equipped with VE.Can bus connections. This allows communication with additional SmartSolar RS & VE.Can MPPT units. The additional units are simply "daisy-chained" together with an RJ45 cable.
When linked together, all individual charge controllers synchronise their charge levels. They can also send their data to a GX unit (such as the Cerbo GX) via the same cable for monitoring.

The SmartSolar RS charge controller is equipped with a display on the front panel. The display shows battery voltages, charge current and voltages from both arrays individually, including instantaneous and total numbers as well as the unit status including all possible error codes.

1) MPPT operating voltage range is limited by battery voltage: PV Voc should not exceed 8 x battery float voltage. For example, a float voltage of 52.8V results in a maximum PV Voc of 422.4V. See product manual for more information.
2) Higher short circuit current may damage the controller if the PV array is connected with reversed polarity.
3) Max. 450 Voc results in approx. 360Vmpp, therefore the maximum PV array is approx. 360V x 20A = 7200Wp.
4) The MPPT RS checks for sufficient resistive isolation between PV+ and GND and PV- and GND. If the resistance is below the threshold, the unit stops charging, indicates the fault and sends the fault signal to the GX unit (if connected) for audible and email notification.
5) Programmable relay that can be set for general alarm, DC undervoltage or genset start/stop function. DC output: 4A up to 35VDC and 1A up to 70VDC.
6) The MPPT RS is currently not compatible with VE.Smart Networks.
7) The charger set point (charge maintenance and constant voltage) can be set to a maximum of 60V . The output voltage at the terminals of the charger may be higher due to temperature compensation as well as compensation of the voltage drop across the battery s cables. The maximum output current is reduced linearly from the total current at 60V to 5A at 62V . The compensation voltage can be set to maximum 62V, the percentage of compensation current to maximum 6%.
