The Bergstrom OpenAir Base is a powerful 12V split air conditioner for campervans, motorhomes and recreational vehicles up to a length of 7 metres, where a conventional roof-mounted air conditioner cannot be installed or can only be installed with difficulty. This applies particularly to vehicles with pop-top or elevating roofs as well as vehicles whose roof area is already occupied by solar panels, roof windows, satellite systems or other installations.
Thanks to modern full inverter technology, the air conditioner operates directly from the leisure battery and requires neither 230V shore power nor an inverter. With a variable cooling capacity of 500 to 1.900W, the compressor, fan and blower are regulated according to demand, allowing the system to operate efficiently and adapt to the actual cooling requirements and making it ideal for both night and daytime operation.
By dividing the system into a separate indoor and outdoor unit, it can be installed flexibly and independently of the available roof area. Depending on the vehicle, the outdoor unit can be installed under the vehicle or in a suitable external spare wheel recess, for example. Especially for pop-top and elevating roofs or roof areas that are already fully occupied, the OpenAir Base therefore offers a flexible alternative to a conventional roof-mounted air conditioner.
Even while driving the air conditioner ensures more pleasant temperatures inside the vehicle. Particularly in vehicles where the standard air conditioning system mainly supplies the driver and front passenger area, the OpenAir Base can additionally air-condition the rear living or sleeping area. Cooling is also available during breaks, overnight stays or longer periods of parking independently of an external power supply.
Conveniently controlled the OpenAir Base is operated via the touchscreen or the Bluetooth app. Depending on the battery type and the associated usable battery capacity (e. g. LiFePO₄, AGM, Gel or lead-acid), selected power level, outside temperature and desired interior temperature long autonomous operating times of the air conditioner are possible. Recharging the 12V battery, for example through solar energy, can additionally extend the operating time, while other 12V consumers such as refrigerators, lighting, water pumps or USB chargers must be taken into account, which reduce the available operating time accordingly.

When is an underfloor air conditioner the right choice?
An underfloor air conditioner is particularly suitable for vehicles with pop-top or elevating roofs as a suitable solution. Due to the special roof construction, conventional roof-mounted air conditioners often cannot be integrated here or can only be integrated with restrictions. The division into a separate indoor and outdoor unit enables an installation that can be flexibly integrated into the vehicle concept.
In addition, the OpenAir Base is also suitable for campers and motorhomes, where the roof area is already occupied by solar panels, roof windows or other accessories. Depending on the vehicle, the outdoor unit can be installed under the vehicle or in a suitable external spare wheel recess, for example.
This gives the system additional possibilities for vehicle planning and enables air conditioning even where a conventional roof-mounted air conditioner cannot be used due to the vehicle design.

Please note, that depending on the position of the air outlet during installation additional air outlets as well as corresponding flexible hoses or comparable components may be required. For the air ducting, Bergstrom recommends flexible PA air conditioning hoses with an outer paper layer and an inner aluminium layer in diameters Ø 60mm or Ø 80mm (depending on whether they are connected to the air distributor or directly to the indoor unit), recommended. Hoses with a diameter smaller than Ø 60mm should be avoided, as they can result in increased pressure losses and reduced unit performance. The OPENAIR BASE is generally designed for different air outlet configurations.
The Bergstrom OpenAir Installation Kits are not compatible with the OpenAir Base 12V.
Bergstrom App - My Open Air Base
With the practical Bergstrom app, you can control your OpenAIR Base 12V completely and conveniently via smartphone or tablet. The application optimised for comfort and efficiency allows you to set the battery type, configuration mode, target temperature, operating mode, timer and air outlet area among other things. All important functions of your air conditioner are therefore available at all times – for maximum comfort in your vehicle.
The app, for controlling your OpenAir Base 12V from a mobile phone or tablet is available for Android and IOS and is available for download from the Play Store and Apple Store.
The touch control panel of the OpenAir Base
The touch control panel of the OpenAir Base enables convenient and intuitive control of the air conditioner. Depending on the installation situation and personal requirements, the control panel can either be mounted directly on the wall or flush-mounted in the wall. The 5m connection cable provides sufficient flexibility when choosing the installation location.
The clearly arranged touchscreen interface allows all important settings to be adjusted quickly and precisely. These include the operating mode, desired target temperature, air outlet area as well as the automatic switch-on and switch-off time. In addition, the unit can be configured and the current operating status can be checked at any time.
For additional convenience, the display switches off automatically after a longer period of inactivity. As soon as you need the touch control panel again, a brief touch is sufficient and all functions are immediately available again..
Attention: Installation in the wall is only suitable for walls with a thickness between 3 and 15mm.

What are the advantages of connecting directly to the 12V leisure battery?
Direct connection to your leisure battery offers three advantages: You do not need an additional inverter, conversion losses from 12V DC to 230V AC are completely eliminated, and you are completely independent of an external power supply. Ideal for off-grid camping without a shore power connection.
What vehicle size is the cooling capacity designed for?
The cooling capacity of this air conditioner is designed for vehicles up to 7 metres in length. For larger vehicles, it may be necessary to separate individual rooms or areas in order to ensure sufficient cooling capacity.
What battery capacity is recommended for operation?
The manufacturer recommends a battery capacity of at least 200Ah for operating the air conditioner. Also take into account the actually available or usable battery capacity, as this can vary depending on the battery type (e. g. LiFePO₄, AGM, Gel or lead-acid). The possible operating time is additionally influenced by the selected power or fan level, other consumers in the vehicle as well as possible recharging through the solar system.
How do I determine the correct battery capacity for my application?
You determine the appropriate battery capacity based on the total power requirement of your 12V consumers and the desired operating time without recharging. To do this, the current consumption of the individual devices is multiplied by their respective operating time and then added together.
The battery type is also important, as the entire nominal capacity should not always be fully used. With LiFePO₄ batteries, around 80–90% or more is often usable, while with AGM, Gel and conventional lead-acid batteries, around 50% is often assumed for a long service life.
Example with a 200Ah battery: A 12V air conditioner with 35A current consumption and a refrigerator with an assumed 4A require a total of 39A.
- LiFePO₄: approx. 180Ah usable → 180Ah ÷ 39A = approx. 4,6 hours
- AGM: approx. 100Ah usable → 100Ah ÷ 39A = approx. 2,6 hours
- Gel: approx. 100Ah usable → 100Ah ÷ 39A = approx. 2,6 hours
- Lead-acid: approx. 100Ah usable → 100Ah ÷ 39A = approx. 2,6 hours
The actual operating time may vary, as the refrigerator and air conditioner do not necessarily operate continuously at full power. Recharging through solar energy or the alternator can additionally extend the operating time. Nevertheless, sufficient reserve should always be allowed when determining the battery capacity for longer operating times, additional consumers or reduced recharging.
