Information on the zero tax rate in Germany


On 1 January 2023, a change regarding value added tax came into force in Germany in accordance with Section 12(3) of the Value Added Tax Act (UStG).

The revised version of the Value Added Tax Act implements the VAT exemption for the purchase of complete solar systems or parts thereof, the acquisition of balcony power plants and home storage systems.  This means that it is currently possible to save 19% VAT in Germany on the purchase.! Of course, certain conditions must be met for this, which are listed below.

These conditions must be met:


Country of delivery: Germany

in accordance with Section 12(3) of the UStG

  • The facility must be close to residential areas or located on public buildings and other buildings used for activities that serve the common good.
  • The purchaser and the plant operator must be the same person.
  • The system must be installed in Germany.
  • The buyer must be subject to the German Value Added Tax Act (UStG).
  • The law applies to the purchase of solar systems or individual components thereof, balcony power stations and home storage systems.
