Intelligent alternator compatibility with the Orion XS 1400

More and more vehicle manufacturers are using intelligent ECU (Engine Control Unit)-controlled alternators to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Intelligent alternators provide a variable output voltage and are switched off when they are not needed. As a result, body batteries are no longer charged properly while driving due to the low voltage or switch-off of the alternator. The wide input voltage range of this charging booster also ensures that the supply batteries of Euro 5 and 6 vehicles are charged quickly and completely.

Integrated engine run detection in the Orion XS 1400

The B2B charger, formerly known as Smart Buckboost, automatically recognises whether the vehicle's engine is running or not. This is possible thanks to the integrated engine shutdown detection. This ensures that the charge booster only works when the alternator is running. This also prevents the vehicle's on-board voltage from becoming too low. It is not necessary to intervene in the vehicle's system, search for a D+ signal, install a separate engine running sensor or make changes to the CAN bus system. When the engine is switched off, the body battery is reliably disconnected from the starter battery. As an alternative to the integrated engine run detection, the Victron Orion XS 1400 DC- DC charging booster can also be activated by a forced charging authorisation, e.g. connected to the ignition switch or D+.

Configuration and monitoring with the Orion XS 1400

Bluetooth Smart integrated:

The wireless solution for setting up, monitoring and updating the booster with Apple and Android smartphones, tablets or other devices. Many parameters can be customised with the VictronConnect app, including the charging current in 0.1A increments, as well as the input voltage range and charging parameters. The VictronConnect app is available for download HERE.

In the VictronConnect app, the most important live data and alarm messages are already available at a glance in the device list, without the need to connect to the device.

VE.direct connection:

This is available for a wired connection to an Victron communication centre, such as the Cerbo GX MK2 or the Venus GX. The data of the charging booster can be displayed on a monitor connected to the Victron communication centre, such as the GX Touch 50 or the Color Control GX, and the configuration can be adjusted. If the communication centre is connected to the Internet, the data can even be viewed worldwide via the Victron VRM portal.

In vehicles, motorhomes and boats with several Victron components already installed, it makes sense to add an Victron communication centre, as all the information from the connected devices is bundled in the communication centre and shown on a display. The monitor is already integrated in the Ekrano GX control centre.

Adaptive 4-stage charging algorithm of the Orion XS 1400

This makes it suitable for all common battery types, such as GEL, AGM, lead-acid and lithium batteries. For lead-acid batteries, it is important that the constant voltage phase is kept short during shallow discharges to avoid overcharging the battery. After a deep discharge, the constant voltage phase is automatically extended to ensure that the battery is fully charged.

There are already 8 pre-programmed charging programmes for the most common battery types. If required, customised charging programmes can be set up in full. They can be configured using the VictronConnect app.

Undervoltage protection in the Orion XS 1400

Switching off the charge booster when the input voltage (starter battery) drops below the set (freely configurable) voltage value and switching the charge booster back on when the input voltage is above the set reconnection value again. This ensures that the starter battery remains ready for use at all times and is not discharged too far. The voltage values can be configured via the VictronConnect app.

Comprehensive electronic protection in the Orion XS 1400

The protection functions include overload, short circuit and overtemperature. The charger is protected against overtemperature by reducing the output power when the maximum product temperature is reached.
