Victron smallBMS NG - Battery management system for Victron Lithium NG batteries

The smallBMS NG (Next Generation) is a battery management system to protect Victron Lithium NG batteries from deep discharge, overcharging, overtemperature etc.. It can be used in 12V, 24V and 48V battery systems. It can monitor up to 4 lithium NG batteries connected in series and up to 10 lithium NG batteries connected in parallel, so the battery system can be flexibly expanded without the need for a new smallBMS NG (battery monitoring system). With this smallBMS NG system, a small battery system consisting of a 12V 100Ah lithium NG battery can be managed up to a battery system with a maximum energy storage capacity of 192kWh in the 12V range, up to 384kWh in the 24V range and 12kWh in the 48V range. The smallBMS NG can only be used in conjunction with the Victron Lithium NG batteries.

The smallBMS NG is a simple and cost-effective alternative to the VE.Bus BMS NG, intended for installations in which no Victron inverter/charger combinations (MultiPlus, Quattro) are used. It offers basic protection of the lithium NG batteries, but does not have a VE.Bus interface and is therefore not suitable for use with VE.Bus MultiPlus and Quattro inverters/chargers. The VE.Bus BMS NG or the Lynx BMS NG must be used here.

Note: The smallBMS NG is an all-encompassing battery management system (BMS) developed for Victron Lithium NG batteries(not compatible with lithium smart batteries).

Bluetooth Smart in the smallBMS NG

Thanks to integrated Bluetooth, it connects directly to all lithium batteries in the system, enabling centralised monitoring, configuration and firmware updates via the VictronConnect app. The instant readout shows important data such as SoC ("State of Charge"), battery temperature, warnings and alarms directly in the device list without the need for a connection.


Pre-alarm output (PRE-ALARM) on the smallBMS NG

The pre-alarm output is normally floating (low) and becomes high in the event of an imminent cell undervoltage, triggering a visible or audible warning when the battery voltage is low, at least 30 seconds before the load disconnect output is deactivated due to cell undervoltage. It can trigger a relay, an LED or an audible alarm. The maximum output current is 500mA and is not short-circuit proof. The pre-alarm level can be customised via VictronConnect.


Load disconnect output (LOAD) on the smallBMS NG

To prevent deep discharge of the battery, DC loads must be switched off or disconnected if there is a risk of cell undervoltage. The load disconnect output of the smallBMS NG can be used for this purpose.

The load-break output is normally high (corresponds to the battery voltage) and becomes potential-free (open circuit) if there is a risk of cell undervoltage. 1A maximum output current means it can even control a high-current relay or contactor.

DC loads with a connection for remote on/off switching, which is activated when it is applied (to the positive terminal of the battery) and deactivated when it remains floating, can be controlled directly via the load-break output. A list of Victron products with this behaviour can be found in the operating instructions, in Appendix A on page 20.

For DC loads with a terminal for remote on/off switching, which switches the load on when the terminal is pulled to the negative pole of the battery and switches it off when the terminal remains floating, an inverting on/off cable can be used. See operating instructions Appendix A on page 20

The "Load" output can be used to control the following devices:

Charge disconnect output (CHARGER) on the smallBMS NG

Battery chargers must interrupt the charging process if there is a risk of overvoltage in the cells or if the temperature of the cells is too low or too high. The charge disconnect output of the smallBMS NG can be used for this purpose.

The charge disconnect output is normally high (corresponding to the battery voltage) and switches to an open circuit state if a cell overvoltage or temperature problem occurs.

Chargers with a remote on/off connection, which is activated when applied (to the positive terminal of the battery) and deactivated when left floating, can be controlled directly via the charge disconnect output. A list of Victron products with this behaviour can be found in the operating instructions, in Appendix A on page 20.

Alternatively, a Cyrix-Li-Charge can be used. This unidirectional battery coupler is located between the charger and the battery and only switches on when a charging voltage is detected. Its control terminal is connected to the charging disconnect output of the smallBMS NG.

The "Charger" output is not suitable for operating an inductive load such as a relay coil.

It can be used to control the following devices:

  • Remote-controlled on/off switch of a charger
  • a Cyrix-Li-Charge charging relay in 120A or 230A version and/or
  • a Cyrix-Li-ct battery coupler in 120A or 230A version
  • Alternatively, special control cables (inverting or non-inverting cables) are available for Victron products.

Connection for remote-controlled switching on/off on the smallBMS NG

A switch can be connected to this connection. It enables remote control of the load and charge disconnect outputs. When switched off, both outputs are potential-free and the connected loads and chargers are switched off. It consists of two terminals, Remote L and Remote H. This socket is bridged on delivery. Alternatively, Remote H can be set to High or Remote L to Low to switch on the smallBMS NG system.


LED indicators on the smallBMS NG

It has two LEDs: a blue LED for the Bluetooth status and a red LED for warnings and alarm errors.


Configurable lower discharge limit for the small BMS NG

Defines the minimum SoC ("State of Charge") to prevent excessive discharge and at the same time provide sufficient energy for self-discharge. A low SoC warning is triggered in VictronConnect, which activates the pre-alarm output when the lower discharge limit is almost reached. A low SoC alarm is triggered when the lower discharge limit is reached. The BMS immediately deactivates the output of the automatic transfer switch, effectively switching off all loads controlled by it.
