Victron pre-charging cable for internal capacitors - arc prevention

The pre-charging cable enables the internal capacitors of an inverter, inverter/charger or MPPT solar charge controller to be pre-charged via the DC terminals before the battery is connected. This ensures that connecting the battery to the connection points does not lead to arcing.

The pre-charging time for a MultiPlus-II 48/5000 when using the pre-charging cable is less than one second. Larger systems require more time to precharge. The largest system for which the pre-charging cable is intended is a 3-unit system with MultiPlus (-II) or Quattro (-II). For larger systems, several pre-charging cables can be used in parallel, or individual units can be pre-charged and connected to the battery one after the other.

Why use a pre-charging cable? - Protection against dangerous arcing.

When connecting a battery directly to an inverter, inverter/charger or MPPT solar charge controller, a critical moment occurs: the internal capacitors of these devices are empty and require a sudden, very high current pulse. This current surge can be very strong and lead to dangerous arcing at the connection points - an intense electrical spark that not only damages the battery terminals and connection clamps, but can also cause severe burns and, in the worst case, trigger a fire.

The pre-charging cable reliably prevents this risk: it gently pre-charges the internal capacitors in a controlled manner before the actual battery connection is made , limiting the charging current to a safe level. Only when the capacitors are fully pre-charged and there is no longer a voltage difference between the battery and the device can the main connection be made - completely spark-free and safe.

No arcing means no damage to battery terminals, clamps and cable lugs, no risk of injury due to sparking and a significantly longer service life for all components thanks to gentle commissioning.

How do I install the pre-charging cable correctly?

Using the pre-charging cable is straightforward - you can connect your battery safely and without sparking in just a few steps:

1. Connect the negative terminal of the battery to the inverter.
2. Do not connect the battery's positive cable yet.
3. Connect the pre-charging cable between the battery and the device.
   1. Connect the BAT+crocodile terminal to the positive terminal of the battery.
   2. Connect the second crocodile clip to the positive terminal of the inverter, inverter/charger or MPPT, using a short wire to reach the terminal if necessary.
4. Wait until the yellow LED goes out, indicating that the pre-charging process is complete.
5. After pre-charging, remove the pre-charging cable and immediately connect the positive battery connection.

What do the LEDs indicate when using the pre-charging cable?

• Red LED: Indicates reverse polarity. The cable is not damaged, but must be disconnected and reconnected correctly.
• Yellow LED: Lights up during pre-charging. Internal capacitors are charged with a current of up to 0.5A. The LED goes out when pre-charging is complete and the device has reached the battery voltage.

Notes on using the pre-charging cable

• If the pre-charging cable remains connected after pre-charging, it will continue to draw a low current.
• In larger systems with inverters or high capacity chargers, this current can remain at a maximum of 0.5A.
• Victron recommends removing the pre-charging cable after pre-charging is complete to avoid unnecessary power consumption.
