Victron VE.Bus BMS NG - Battery management system for Victron LiFePO4 NG batteries

The VE.Bus BMS NG (Next Generation) is a battery management system that has been specially designed to protect Victron Lithium NG batteries from deep discharge, overcharging, overtemperature, etc. It can be used in 12V, 24V and 48V battery systems. 50 batteries can be used when configuring a battery bank with 12V or 24V batteries, while up to 25 batteries can be used with 48V batteries. This means that the battery system can be flexibly expanded without the need for a new VE.Bus BMS NG (battery monitoring system). With this VE.Bus BMS NG system, a small battery system consisting of a 12V 100Ah lithium NG battery can be managed up to a battery system with a maximum energy storage capacity of 192kWh in the 12V range, up to 384kWh in the 24V range and 128kWh in the 48V range. It can only be used in conjunction with the Victron Lithium NG batteries.

The VE.Bus BMS NG is intended for the connection and protection of Victron Lithium NG batteries in systems that contain an Victron VE.Bus inverter/charger (MultiPlus, MultiPlus II, Quattro) or a VE.Bus inverter (Phoenix) in addition to other devices. Important functions such as activating/deactivating charging and discharging based on battery conditions are communicated directly with the VE.Bus end devices via the VE.Bus connection.

Of course, the VE.Bus BMS NG can also be used in installations without an Victron VE.Bus end device, perhaps you are planning to expand the system later with a MultiPlus, Quattro combi device or Phoenix inverter. For installations in which no Victron inverters/charger combinations (MultiPlus, Quattro) or Phoenix inverters will be used, the Victron smallBMS NG offers basic protection for your lithium NG batteries. However, it does not have a VE.Bus interface.

Note: The VE.Bus BMS NG is an all-encompassing battery management system (BMS) developed for Victron Lithium NG batteries(not compatible with lithium smart batteries).

Bluetooth Smart on the VE.Bus BMS NG

Thanks to integrated Bluetooth, it connects directly to all lithium NG batteries in the system and thus enables central monitoring, configuration and firmware updates via the VictronConnect app. The instant readout shows important data such as SoC ("State of Charge"), battery temperature, warnings and alarms directly in the device list without having to call out the respective device.


Pre-alarm output (PRE-ALARM) on the VE.Bus BMS NG

The pre-alarm output is normally potential-free (low) and becomes high in the event of an imminent undervoltage of the cell, triggering a visible or audible warning when the battery voltage is low, at least 30 seconds before the load disconnection output is deactivated due to cell undervoltage. It can trigger a relay, an LED or an audible alarm. The maximum output current is 1A and is not short-circuit proof.


Load disconnect output (LOAD) on the VE.Bus BMS NG

To prevent deep discharge of the battery, DC loads must be switched off or disconnected if there is a risk of cell undervoltage. The load-break output controls the remote on/off switching of a BatteryProtect, inverter, DC-DC converter or other loads with a remote on/off function.

The load-break output is normally high (corresponds to the battery voltage) and becomes potential-free (open circuit) in the event of imminent cell undervoltage. Thanks to its maximum output current of 1A, it can even control a high-current relay or a contactor.

The "Load" output can be used to control the following devices:

Charging disconnect output (CHARGER) on the VE.Bus BMS NG

Battery chargers must interrupt the charging process if there is a risk of overvoltage in the cells or if the temperature of the cells is too low or too high. The charge disconnect output controls the connection for remotely switching on/off chargers such as the Smart IP43 charger, a Cyrix Li-Charge relay, a Cyrix Li-Cct battery coupler or a BatteryProtect.

The charge disconnect output is normally high (corresponds to the battery voltage) and becomes potential-free in the event of an imminent overvoltage or overtemperature of the cell. The maximum output current is 500mA and is not short-circuit proof.

The "Charger" output is not suitable for operating an inductive load such as a relay coil.

It can be used to control the following devices:


Connection for remote-controlled switching on/off on the VE.Bus BMS NG

A switch can be connected to this connection. It enables remote control of the load and charge disconnection outputs. When switched off, both outputs are potential-free and the connected loads and chargers are switched off. It consists of two terminals, Remote L and Remote H. It can be operated with an On switch or relay contact between L and H.
For correct operation, an on/off switch or the standard wire loop must be installed.


Devices for remote control of the VE.Bus BMS NG

A GX device, such as an Cerbo GX MK2, a Digital Multi Control (DMC) panel or a VE.Bus Smart Dongle (including any combination) can be connected to the BMS via the "Remote Control Panel" connection. This accessory can be used in combination with the BMS to remotely control the switching status of the VE.Bus inverter or the inverter/charger
(On / Off / Charger only).

In this example, the BMS is connected to an Victron Lithium NG battery, a MultiPlus and an Cerbo GX.


LED displays on the VE.Bus BMS NG

It has three LEDs: a blue LED for the Bluetooth status, a red LED for warnings and alarm errors and a VE.Bus status LED.
